The story behind Bledoscope

Bledoscope began in 2018 as a simple blog inspired by love for Lake Bled. Its purpose was to help visitors discover the area through the eyes of a local – someone who has called Bled home for almost thirty years.

Rather than focusing only on the most famous sights, Bledoscope set out to share quieter places and lesser-known areas of the region. Places where the sounds of nature replace the noise of everyday life, inviting visitors to slow down and form a deeper connection with this corner of Slovenia and the Julian Alps.

The blog was accompanied by guided walks for small groups around Lake Bled and to the hills rising above it. Inspired by Bled’s long tradition of nature-based healing, introduced more than a century ago by a Swiss natural healer, these walks encouraged visitors to spend time outdoors and experience the restorative qualities of nature for themselves.

Bledoscope today: finding calm in nature

After a quieter period, shaped by life itself: the arrival of a child, personal challenges and moments of loss – Bledoscope gradually found its way forward again.

This year, the project has begun to grow once more, becoming more mature, more focused and ready to continue its journey.

Bledoscope is not a checklist of things to do in Bled. It is a local guide for those who feel drawn to nature, unhurried exploration and places that offer a sense of calm, presence and escape from the pace of everyday life.

Alongside honest descriptions of trails around Bled, Bledoscope also offers slow local walks around Lake Bled and the surrounding hills for those who wish to spend time in nature and experience the area beyond its most familiar sights.

What makes someone a true local?

I still remember moving to Bled as a thirteen-year-old. One of my neighbours used to say that it takes twenty-five years to become a local. Even then, she would add with a smile, you never quite become a true Blejčan. In our family, the only true Blejčan is actually my son. He was born here, has grown up beside the lake and surrounding hills and carries a natural connection to this place.

My connection to Bled is a little different. Perhaps it is not quite a sense of belonging, but something closer to a lasting attachment. Over the years, I have moved home seven times. Yet somehow, I have always found my way back here.

There must be something between this place and me, especially the lake. It has been a quiet companion through different chapters of life: walking or running along its paths or simply sitting for a while and watching. The lake has a way of slowing things down. Of creating space to think, to breathe and to reconnect with what matters.

Sharing the same view

After experiencing living in different cultures – from the Scandinavian concept of friluftsliv to the Spanish passion for la vida – I often found myself returning to the same idea.

I dreamed of inviting people to my hometown, showing them beautiful morning views and sharing local stories that reveal a different side of Bled.

Ideally, it would all take place in an old 19th-century villa overlooking the lake. That part of the dream will have to wait. But the desire to welcome people and help them experience this place more deeply has stayed with me.

Today, my walks are shaped less by historical facts and more by a belief in the restorative power of nature. It is a perspective that grew from my own experience of living with autoimmune disease and finding comfort, strength, and balance outdoors.

Although I am a licensed guide for the region of the Julian Alps, I prefer to think of myself simply as a local welcoming you to my hometown.
