Greet the day from Straža Hill above Lake Bled

A woman watches the sunrise from Straža Hill above Lake Bled

Some mornings are worth beginning a little higher above the lake. A slightly short hike through the forest on Straža Hill leads to several viewpoints where you can watch Bled slowly wake beneath you, with the lake, castle and surrounding hills and villages touched by the first light of the day.

The experience changes with the seasons. In summer, the sun greets you early; in winter, it rises much later; and in autumn, mist often drifts across the landscape below.

My favourite viewpoint on Straža Hill is Dindol, looking towards two mountain ranges, the Karawanks and the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

Straža is one of the easiest hills to reach from the centre of Bled or Lake Bled. While it is best known for summer tobogganing during warm months, its quieter side reveals itself in the early morning, when the paths are still peaceful and the views are yours to enjoy.

At the top of Straža, you will find four viewpoints – or razgledna točka in Slovenian – with another hidden along the fitness/trim trail on the way up. To visit them all, follow the panoramic route, a gentle walk at the top of the hill of around half an hour.

Hiking and walking trails on Straža Hill with the view towards the mountains

Walking and hiking paths wind their way across Straža Hill.

1. Main Viewpoint on Straža Hill: Views over Lake Bled and towards Bled Castle

From the main viewpoint, you can look across Lake Bled towards Bled Castle, the centre of Bled and the neighbouring villages. In the distance, you will also see the forested Pokljuka Plateau and the mountain ranges in the back, the Karawanks and the Julian Alps.

The viewpoint lies above the Straža chairlift. You can reach it by following the main hiking path or, during the warmer months, by taking the chairlift when it is operating.

The main viewpoint, overlooking Lake Bled, lies just above the summer toboggan run.

At the top, you will find a large wooden frame – a popular spot for photographs with Bled in the background.

This viewpoint is easy to find, while the others require a little more exploring. Follow the fitness trail shown on the maps along the way, and look for the green signposts marked with a binocular symbol.

Look for the green signs marked with a binocular symbol to find the viewpoints at the top of Straža Hill.

Follow the fitness trail past the Bled Fitness Promenade (Blejska fitnes promenada), and the viewpoints will be easy to find. You’ll find benches at each viewpoint, inviting you to sit for a while, slow down and enjoy the scenery. You’ll also find information boards where you can discover a few interesting local stories and learn more about the peaks and landscapes you see in the distance.

2. Dindol Viewpoint on Straža Hill: Countryside and Mountain Views

The second viewpoint, Dindol, lies on the eastern side of Straža. From here, the landscape opens towards Bled’s surrounding villages and meadows, the Radovljica Plain, the Karawanks with peaks such as Begunjščica and the distant Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

One of my favourite ways to start the day is to walk up Straža Hill and watch the morning slowly unfold over the countryside from Dindol Viewpoint.

To reach the third viewpoint at the top of Straža, simply continue along the fitness trail.

3. Selo Viewpoint on Straža Hill: Views over Selo Village and the Jelovica Plateau

The third viewpoint looks out over the village of Selo, with the forest-covered Jelovica Plateau rising in the distance. There is also a bench where you can sit for a while, take in the peaceful countryside and enjoy the view.

After a while, the sun finally broke through the clouds on a late November day, casting warm light over the village of Selo, as seen from Selo Viewpoint on Straža Hill.

4. Mlino Viewpoint on Straža Hill: Views towards Bled Island

The fourth viewpoint is called Mlino, named after the small lakeside village that lies beneath. It offers views of Lake Bled, including Bled Island, with the hills of Ojstrica and Mala Osojnica, and Pokljuka Plateau rising above them. On a clear day, you can also spot the highest peaks of the Julian Alps in the distance.

Take a moment to enjoy the view before continuing along the fitness trail, which will eventually bring you back to the main viewpoint on Straža Hill.

5. Lower Viewpoint on Straža Hill: Views over Southern Lake Bled and towards Bled Castle

Besides the viewpoints at the top of Straža Hill, there is another one a little further down the hillside. You’ll pass it on your way up or down if you follow the fitness trail.

From here, you can enjoy views of the southern part of Lake Bled, as well as spot Bled Castle perched high above the lake, with St Martin’s Church and Slovenian Square just below it. There is also a covered wooden bench where you can sit for a while, take in the scenery and enjoy a peaceful moment above the lake.

Straža Hill’s scenic walking paths are also part of Bled’s rich history as a health resort, thanks to Arnold Rikli, a Swiss natural healer and pioneer of wellness tourism who lived and worked in Bled in the 19th century.

Long before walking in nature became a popular way to improve our wellbeing, Rikli recognised its health benefits. Alongside other outdoor activities, such as sunbathing, daily walks were an important part of his natural healing treatments. His patients, who came to Bled to recover from illness or improve their health, were encouraged to spend time in nature, including on the slopes of Straža Hill.

Today, you can still follow some of the paths associated with Rikli’s time in Bled. Near the fitness trail at the top of Straža Hill, you will find a statue dedicated to him, a reminder of Bled’s long tradition of connecting nature with health and wellbeing.

Alongside Straža’s well-maintained walking paths and scenic viewpoints, you will also find outdoor fitness and exercise equipment along the fitness trail, known as Bled Fitness Promenade.

Along Bled Fitness Promenade, you will come across several exercise stations equipped with different fitness machines and wooden structures, each offering a variety of exercises you can try.

This wooden structure, where you can practise jumping and other exercises, is one of eight wooden stations along Bled Fitness Promenade.

Whether you prefer a leisurely walk with scenic views, a more intensive hike, a run through the forest or some outdoor exercise, Straža Hill offers plenty of opportunities to stay active while enjoying its beautiful natural surroundings.

  • Location: Straža Hill (Google maps) is located on the southeastern side of Lake Bled. It rises 642 metres (2,106 feet) above sea level.
  • Starting point: There are several starting points for hike up Straža Hill. The main and best-maintained hiking trail begins at Pod Stražo (Google maps), above the Rikli Balance Hotel. You can also reach Straža from the village of Mlino or from the neighbouring hill of Dobra Gora.
  • Getting there: As Straža Hill is located close to Bled’s centre and the lake, you can easily reach the foot of the hill by walking or by bicycle. The nearest car park is located at the foot of Straža Hill and is called Pod Stražo.
  • Walking time: It takes around 20 minutes to reach the main viewpoint at the top of Straža Hill from Pod Stražo. If you would like to explore the hill further and enjoy a panoramic walk, allow an additional 30 minutes.
  • Hills nearby: From Straža Hill, you can continue your hike to the neighbouring hill of Dobra Gora, which rises above the village of Selo near Bled.
  • Safety: You can follow the main hiking trail to the top of Straža Hill and return the same way, or choose one of the other trails to make a circular walk. Keep in mind that the paths can become slippery after rain, so I recommend wearing sturdy footwear with good grip. Please keep to the marked trails and avoid walking on unmarked paths.
